La luce e le tenebre. Il nuovo libro di Vittorio Messori

Il noto apologeta cattolico Vittorio Messori ha pubblicato una nuova collezione di suoi articoli (la quinta) chiamata “La luce e le tenebre” (Sugarco). Ogni nuovo libro di questo autore è occasione di riflessione sulla sua opera e sullo stato dell’apologetica cattolica.

Blessed Antonio Rosmini. A new look

Antonio Rosmini is one of the most influential Catholic intellectuals of the last two centuries: “Fr Rosmini found himself wedged between the obligation to renew Catholic philosophy and finding his works on the Index. But his obedience to the Church was admirable:  “In everything, I want to base myself on the authority of the Church, and I want the whole world to know that I adhere to this authority alone” (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, “Note on the Force of the Doctrinal Decrees”, L’Osservatore Romano English edition [ORE], 25 July 2001, p. 9).
To close the issue definitively, the Pontiff submitted all Rosmini’s works to examination by the Congregation of the Index. On 3 July 1854, it was decreed: “All the works of Antonio Rosmini-Serbati that have recently been examined are to be dismissed, and this examination in no way detracts from the good name of the author, nor of the religious Society founded by him, nor from his life and singular merits towards the Church” (R. Malone, “Historical Overview of the Rosmini Case”, ORE, 25 July 2001, p. 10)” (vatican.va).

Ad astra- Why is beauty truth?
Aurelio Porfiri meets with E. Michael Jones

Why is beauty truth? This is a question for our understanding of what we are. E. Michael Jones, quoting on medieval writers has said: “Over the course of the Middle Ages, as Aristotle began to supplant Plato in the Scholastic mind, beauty began to acquire the status of a transcendental, “semi-consciously at first,” then more spe- cifically in the writings of Robert Grosseteste, who “attributed the name of Beauty (Pulchritudo) to God, and wrote, ‘If everything desires the good and the beautiful together, the good and the beautiful are the same’”, but while the same in terms of the order of Being, they appear as different to us according to the order of knowing. “For beauty,” according to Grosseteste, “is a disposition of the good in so far as it pleases the apprehension, whereas the good strictly speaking has to do with the disposition in which it pleases our affections”. So what is beauty? Why it is important for us?
Aurelio Porfiri is speaking on Sunday 4 December 2021 at 6 pm (Rome time) about these topics with E. Michael Jones.
E. Michael Jones received his Ph.D. in American literature from Temple University in 1979. After getting fired from his job as assistant professor of American Literature in St. Mary’s College, Jones presciently got out of academe and founded Fidelity, now Culture Wars, magazine, which is now celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Dr. Jones is the author of over 20 books on topics ranging from metaphysics to horror films. His most recent book Logos Rising: A History of Ultimate Reality is being translated into Farsi. This past year he completed his book on aesthetics: The Dangers of Beauty: The Conflict between Mimesis and Concupiscence in the Fine Arts.
The Dangers of Beauty begins with Giotto’s liberation of Italian art from the tyranny of Greek Models, moves on to discuss music in Germany, poetry in England and decline of all forms of art under the modernist interregnum.

Fellow del Trinity College di Londra in composizione musicale. Già Organista Sostituto nella Basilica di San Pietro, oltre a molte chiese notevoli a Roma. Ha insegnato e diretto musica sacra a Macao e Shanghai in Cina. Riconosciuto da The Cambridge Companion to Choral Music come uno dei tre compositori religiosi italiani del XX e XXI secolo “la cui musica corale mostra chiaramente l’influenza delle tradizioni nazionali”.
Ha pubblicato oltre 30 libri e 600 articoli, registrato oltre 10 CD e ha oltre 100 composizioni musicali stampate da editori in Cina, Francia, Germania, Italia e USA. Ha ricoperto il ruolo di direttore artistico e membro di giuria per concorsi corali in Cina, Italia, Thailandia e USA. Ha diretto cori in Italia e in Cina (a Macao e a Shanghai).
Fondatore e Direttore artistico di Choralife (editore di spartiti e CD) e di Chorabooks (editore di libri ed ebook). Creatore e Capo redattore di Altare Dei, rivista dedicata alla Liturgia, alla Musica Sacra e alla Cultura Cattolica.
Prosegue le sue ricerche nella composizione musicale, soprattutto nel mondo delle scale modali e nella tradizione romana della musica sacra, di cui è erede e seguace.
